Gunmen shoot women in Pattani

PATTANI, Thailand – In two separate incidents in as many days, pairs of women were ambushed by gunmen in Pattani, local media reported.

    Two sisters in their 40s were shot Monday (April 22nd) in broad daylight by gunmen who pulled up alongside their motorcycle as they drove home from a market in the Khok Pho district, The Bangkok Post reported. Both women were wounded and are in the hospital.

    On Sunday evening, two other women on a motorcycle were ambushed on a road in Khok Pho, in a near-identical scenario. One was killed, the other wounded, according to The Post.

    Meanwhile, police are investigating a series of cloth banners that popped up overnight at a total of 45 sites in Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala.

    All bore messages opposing peace talks that began last month between the government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional. The talks are scheduled to resume in a week.

    National Security Council Secretary-General Paradorn Pattanatabut said Monday that the recent insurgent attacks and the banners were the work of other insurgent groups who want to be included in the talks, The Nation reported.
