Muslim woman to be charged after Burma rioting

RANGOON, Burma – Police announced Thursday (May 2nd) they will charge a Muslim woman with blasphemy after she apparently collided with a Buddhist monk on the street, sparking two days of communal violence between Muslims and Buddhists, AFP reported.

The riots left one dead, several injured and several mosques and Muslim homes damaged.

The woman, who was on a bike when she ran into the monk and spilled his begging bowl, was detained by police in Oakkan, about 100km north of Rangoon, along with a second woman. In addition, 21 other people are being charged in connection with the violence.
