SEMARANG, Indonesia – The Semarang District Court on Thursday (December 12th) sentenced an Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) member to two years in prison for fatally striking a woman with a vehicle during a clash in Central Java in July, local media reported.

The defendant, Sony Haryono, was convicted of manslaughter under Indonesia's traffic law, according to Tribunnnews.com. Prosecutors had demanded a three-year sentence.

The July 18th incident occurred as FPI members fled Kendal, in Central Java's Sukorejo sub-district, where they had been attempting to force closure of "entertainment venues" amid armed resistance from local residents.

While driving away, Sony's vehicle struck the victim, Tri Munarti, who was riding a motorcycle driven by her husband.

So far, five of seven suspects named by police in the incident have been convicted. Two FPI members arrested with a machete and a samurai sword were found guilty of breaching a 1951 law on carrying weapons. Each got a four-month sentence.

Two Sukorejo residents each received five-month terms and a Rp 2,500-fine (21 cents) for damaging an FPI vehicle during the clash.
