BANGKOK, Thailand – Opposition protesters blocked voting at thousands of polling stations Sunday (February 2nd), AFP reported.
Despite weeks of mass street demonstrations aimed at forcing her from office, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was widely expected to retain the office, but widespread disruption of voting means results are not expected for weeks.
About 10,000 of nearly 94,000 polling stations were unable to open, according to the Election Commission, affecting millions.
The disruption means that even if Yingluck wins, she will remain in a caretaker role with limited power until elections are held in troubled areas, where there will not be enough MPs to convene parliament.
Meanwhile in Pattani, three soldiers and a government official were killed after their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb and suspected insurgents opened fire late Saturday. Five others, including three soldiers, were injured in the attack.
