Brunei detains man with JI connections

February 28, 2014

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei – Brunei's Internal Security Department (ISD) has detained an Indonesian national who claims ties to terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), local media reported Thursday (February 27th).

"Daniel, alias Awaluddin Sitorus" was arrested February 21st for alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities, according to Kompas.

In a statement, the ISD said Daniel underwent military training in Afghanistan in the '90s and was detained in Indonesia in 2000 for suspected involvement in a Medan bomb attack.

He was also allegedly in contact with the leader of Kumpulan Mujahidin Indonesia (Indonesian Mujahideen Group) and helped another suspected terrorist enter Brunei last year.

ISD believes Daniel was trying to help more current and former JI members into Brunei, which JI considers a "safe haven", according to The Brunei Times.
