This is what happens when non-writers comment on a piece of literature: accused of being melodramatic, a puppet of BNPT, having theosophic content, lacking seriousness, defaming and deceitful. These knee-jerk and morally devoid accusations from groups that praise the merits of jihad while twisting its meaning with their egos were uttered loudly at Borobudur hotel, Jakarta, on June 20, 2012 during the launching of the first novel by a convicted terrorist, Khairul Ghazali entitled “Cloud of Jihad”. I happened to be present at the launching held by BNPT which was attended by those radical Islamic groups. Dr. Asep Usman Ismail MA, a lecturer at the Faculty of Proselytization and Communication at UIN Jakarta as moderator in the book discussion said, “The Cloud of Jihad has met correct literary standards even though the author is a novice within the literary arena. This means, a new author has emerged in Indonesia from behind prison bars.” In the face of vicious criticisms from Jihadists accusing the writer of the Cloud of Jihad of being “melodramatic”, Prof. Dr. Sarlito Wirawan Sarwono, Senior Lecturer from the psychology department of UI responded calmly and wisely, “When writing a novel one needs to melodramatic, otherwise it wouldn’t be a novel but a scientific paper. This novel has succeeded in fleshing out chapters like Barracuda and Bilik Bercinta and the inner conflict of the characters are worthy of psychological analysis.”

Amazing! This novel was written from a prison cell by a reformed terrorist, yet the language is no less compelling than that of a great author. It is worthy of study because it very much resembles Pram's work in the Bumi Manusia tetralogy. This is a piece of work capable of remedying the stagnation of Indonesia's ailing literature.
A caliph is freely chosen by Muslims everywhere for his wisdom and spiritual qualifications. The ISIL leader's proclamation of himself as caliph over all Muslims violates the principles of Islam.
Indonesia's tradition of moderate, tolerant Islam is under threat by hard-line groups who are imposing their conservative views on others and intimidating religious minorities.
