Greetings from Pattani. A volunteer group from Malaysia based in Pattani provides assistance in 4 schools in south Thailand teaching English speaking classes. Spoken and written Malay has never enjoyed any cooperation from the ASEAN Secretariat even though it has been promised in line with ASEAN 2015.

I like the article for its balanced and impartiality. One cannot get such reporting on such an issue in any of the official newspaper in Malaysia. It is an issue which the Malaysian Government under the current political party has not got the political will to make a success of it. It is not because they do not know but because of their racist policy to remain in power. And that is the nub of the problem. Singapore knows the importance of the English langauge and a second langauge and has the political will to do something about because of economic survival. She has no options. Other Asean countries are not faced similar stark choice of survival and so they play around with the langauge issue.
