Islamic school teacher slain in Deep South

PATTANI, Thailand – Suspected insurgents killed an Islamic school teacher and launched a car bomb attack at a government office in Pattani province, local media reported Thursday (August 16th).

    The car bomb attack in Pahare district Thursday damaged several vehicles and injured two people. Police are on alert because the gold Toyota Vigo used in the attack was reported missing in Bangkok, according to The Nation.

    Gunmen shot dead Royali Hawae Keji, 51, a teacher at Sai Buri Islam Witthaya School, as he rode home by motorcycle on Sai Buri-Panare road at 6.35pm Wednesday, The Bangkok Post reported.

    The shooting was one of 11 incidents of violence or attempted violence around Pattani province between 5pm Wednesday and 12.20am Thursday, according to The Post.

    Police found and destroyed two homemade bombs stuffed in cocoa cans in Khok Pho district. A fire was started at a petrol station, and insurgents shot and damaged a power transformer and ten security cameras.

    In Nong Chik district, three mobile telephone signal posts were set on fire, two 7-Eleven convenience stores were targeted for arson and a power transformer was shot and damaged by gunmen, causing a blackout.
