BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai cabinet extended the emergency decree in the three southern border provinces – except for Pattani's Mae Lan district – for another three months Tuesday (September 11th), local media reported.

Given recurring violence in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, the decree now runs through December 19th as proposed by the security agencies, although the overall situation is improving, Deputy Prime Minister General Yutthasak Sasiprapa said, according to MCOT Online. The executive decree was first implemented in July 2005.

As for the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) insurgent group's bid to negotiate with Fourth Army Region commander Lieutenant General Udomchai Thammasarorat, Yutthasak said the issue will be discussed. The BRN is said to have asked for guarantees of safety and for job security. About 100 insurgents on government lists have reportedly expressed willingness to turn themselves in if authorities agree to these conditions.
