YALA, Thailand – Amid heavy security, train service between Yala and Sungai Kolok resumed Wednesday (November 21st), local media reported. It had been halted after insurgents detonated a bomb on the tracks Sunday, killing three people and injuring at least 16 others in Narathiwat's Rueso district.
Army and air force security officials were deployed Wednesday, with helicopters flying overhead to guard the carriages in spots targeted by insurgents before, especially along a 40km stretch between Balaw and Tanyongmas stations.
The Nation reported that although the track at the site of Sunday's attack has been repaired, trains must slow while passing over it, heightening the security risk. Security officials were stationed there and elsewhere to prevent a repeat attack.
A teacher in Narathiwat who boarded a train in Ra-ngae district told MCOT Online that while Sunday's attack frightened him, he will continue using rail service because it is affordable.
