Buddhists, Muslims riot in Burma

March 22, 2013

RANGOON, Burma – At least ten people are dead following riots between Buddhists and Muslims in the central Burmese city of Meiktila, reportedly touched off Wednesday (March 20th) by an argument in a gold shop, AFP reported.

Police say a dispute in the shop soon spilled into the street and attracted about 200 people, adding that at least two people were dead, one of them a Buddhist monk.

But Win Htein, an MP representing the opposition National League for Democracy party, told AFP that he saw more than ten bodies Thursday after fighting erupted for a second day despite a curfew. Several mosques were reportedly torched by mobs.
