BLANG MANCUNG, Indonesia – Rescuers struggled Wednesday (July 3rd) to reach survivors of Tuesday's 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Aceh province that collapsed buildings and triggered landslides, killing at least 24 people and injuring ten times as many, AFP reported.

Among the hardest hit areas was the village of Blang Mancung, in Central Aceh district, where at least six children were killed when a mosque collapsed during their Qur'an reading session.

Landslides blocked many roads, complicating rescue operations and preventing those trapped in the area from leaving the dangerous conditions.

The national disaster agency said 16 aftershocks rocked the region late Tuesday, further panicking those who had managed to crowd into makeshift shelters.
