Indonesia leader calls for 'concrete action' against asylum seekers

July 06, 2013

BOGOR, Indonesia – President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) met Friday (July 5th) with new Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to discuss the waves of asylum seekers who attempt to make it to Australia every year, despite dangerous seas, AFP reported.

Often, the boats are barely sea-worthy and human traffickers charge passengers exorbitant amounts for the perilous trips. Friday, a boat carrying dozens of asylum-seekers ran into trouble south of Indonesia on its way to Christmas Island.

Following Friday's annual Indonesia-Australia summit at the presidential palace in Bogor, SBY said "concrete" action was needed – particularly from the countries of origin and transit countries through which asylum-seekers pass. "It is unfair if only Indonesia and Australia are burdened with this," the president said

He announced plans to host a meeting "in co-operation with Australia" and to include countries of origin and transit, including Afghanistan, Iran, Burma, Thailand and Malaysia. No specific date for the meeting was proposed.
