BAH, Indonesia – Tents, blankets and other forms of aid began reaching victims Thursday (July 4th), two days after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Aceh, killing at least 30 people, AFP reported.
Landslides triggered by the quake slowed rescue efforts but by Thursday, roadways were cleared enough to get truckloads of supplies into the most affected villages. The Red Cross estimates about 5,000 people fled their homes and many now are in desperate need of food, blankets, mosquito nets and shelter.
"Today our priority is to put up tents for people who have taken refuge," said National Disaster Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
He said Thursday that 30 people are confirmed dead, 12 are missing and 275 are injured. More than 300 buildings were damaged, many of them collapsed.
