The hostages, including a 2-year-old, were abducted last week in tit-for-tat kidnappings.

The ordeal ended when a Muslim clan leader known as Commander Hassan agreed to release his eight hostages Monday, after a rival clan leader known as Jiabrin freed Commander Hassan's three daughters late Sunday, according to Paolo Perez, commander of an army battalion on Basilan. The feud between the two families has dragged on for 30 years and turned deadly at times.
