Militants kill couple in Deep South despite Ramadan ceasefire

NARATHIWAT, Thailand – Suspected militants shot and killed a married couple in Narathiwat's Rangae district Sunday (July 21st) despite a negotiated 40-day ceasefire during Ramadan between the Thai government and rebel group Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), local media reported.

    Songchai Promchan, 40, and his wife, Nittaya Fainareepon, 35, were stopped by two gunmen as they rode home after selling vegetables at Tanyongmas market, according to The Bangkok Post. The couple was ordered off their motorbike and shot in the head multiple times at point-blank range despite pleas for their life, said Jiradej Phrasawarng, chief of Rangae district police station.

    Ten spent 9mm shells were collected from the scene, according to Jiradej.

    In a separate incident, a defence volunteer was seriously injured in Pattani's Sai Buri district, The Nation reported. National Security Council secretary general Paradorn Pattanathabut said he would report the incidents to Malaysia, which is hosting the peace talks between the government and the BRN.
