July 30, 2013

BANGKOK, Thailand – More details emerged Sunday (July 28th) about two Indian nationals arrested in Thailand for allegedly smuggling more than 12kg of crystal methamphetamines, according to local media.

Virdi Hardev Singh and Puran Singh were arrested Friday after they arrived at Samui International Airport. Customs officials estimate the street value of the drugs at Bt. 43m ($1.4m), The Nation reported.

Deputy Finance Minister Benja Louicharoen said the pair flew from India to Singapore and then to Koh Samui, and planned to deliver the stash to a contact in Bangkok. Benja said customs officials became suspicious after conducting X-rays on the men's luggage.

According to The Bangkok Post, the two told authorities this was their second trip to Thailand. The first had been to check out the smuggling route.
