JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Pamekasan, East Java, is urging the government to pass a law that would force teenage girls to undergo virginity tests before they can be admitted to high schools, local media reported.
MUI Pamekasan Secretary Zainal Alim told Kompas.com on Tuesday (August 20th) that the proposed law will function as a preventative measure for all students.
"If there are students behind in school because they are practicing free sex, schools will be tarnished by society saying the school cannot fix their students' morals."
Education Minister Mohammad Nuh condemned the proposal and a similar one raised by the head of Prabumulih: "If you want to protect your children from negative influence, there are others ways. This is not wise."
Masruchah, the deputy head of the national commission on violence against woman, told AFP, "A virginity test is a form of sexual violence against women."
