Death toll in Philippines ferry disaster climbs to 75

August 23, 2013

MANILA, Philippines – Divers have recovered more bodies from the ferry that sank last week off Cebu, raising the confirmed death toll Thursday (August 22nd) to 75, AFP reported.

The ferry, carrying 870 people, sank quickly after colliding with a cargo ship. A total of 750 people were rescued.

Navy and coastguard ships and helicopters are still scanning the waters. "We are still hoping to find more survivors but we are realistic and we expect we will find more dead bodies," said local coastguard commander Weniel Azcuna.

Efforts also continue to clean up a large oil spill from the ferry.
