Thai rights group condemns insurgent shooting

BANGKOK, Thailand – The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday (May 1st) condemned the shooting Tuesday in Narathiwat of Jariya Promnuan, 29, a public health official who was two months pregnant, The Bangkok Post reported.

Jariya, the wife of a police officer, was shot point blank in the head in broad daylight while shopping at a flea market outside a hospital in Srisakorn district. Four suspected insurgents on motorcycles also seriously injured Jariya's 25-year-old colleague.

The NHRC said the act was "cruel, inhuman and savage" and called on insurgents to stop attacking the innocent. It also said authorities need to provide assistance to families of victims and that locals need to help monitor for threats.

Meanwhile, the government Thursday paid Bt. 2.619m ($80,800) to 61 people affected by insurgent bombings April 6th and 7th in Yala. Bt. 2.45m ($75,650) was paid to 44 victims for property damage, while the other 17 received Bt. 10,000 ($310) each for injuries, The Nation reported.
