Security tightened following train attack in Thai south

NARATHIWAT, Thailand – Authorities in the southern provinces have tightened security following a deadly attack in broad daylight on a train in Narathiwat on Tuesday (August 28th), local media reported.

    At least ten heavily armed men opened fire on a passenger train in Cho Airong district, killing one security volunteer and wounding another, police said. None of the passengers aboard was injured.

    Police and army troops have set up more checkpoints on the road and were seen patrolling the railway, paying particular attention to risky spots in Cho I Rong, Rangae and Rusoh districts in Narathiwat.

    Authorities believe that the shooting was in retaliation for the killing of a member of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil group by a local defence volunteer firing from a train Saturday.
