Jakarta police destroy drugs

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Jakarta police sent what they hoped was a strong signal Wednesday (February 6th) by destroying drugs with a street value of more than Rp. 11 billion ($1.13m), seized during raids over the last several weeks, local media reported.

"The narcotics were owned by 15 suspects, all of whom are present here today. Our officers are making them destroy their own drugs, in the hope it will act as a deterrent," city police spokesman Rikwanto said, in comments quoted by The Jakarta Post.

Jaringnews.com reported that personnel from the Jakarta Police Narcotics Directorate and the Jakarta High Court were also on hand, adding that the drugs were blended and burned.

The haul included 5kg of crystal methamphetamine; thousands of pills, and 6kg of marijuana seized during raids in December and January.
