Indonesia makes arrest in murder of Sampang Muslim cleric

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Police arrested Sayeri in North Jakarta for the October 2012 murder of Muslim cleric Habib Alwi, police said Sunday (November 17th) according to local media.

Sayeri, one of two men allegedly involved in the crime, will be charged with premeditated murder, a capital offense, according to The Jakarta Globe.

The second suspect, Matluki, was convicted in July of the murder and given a life sentence.

Police also seized a large sickle allegedly used in the attack, Sampang Police Chief Imran Edwin told Tempo.

Habib Alwi was killed in Sampang when he was stopped and attacked by two men on a motorbike while returning home.
