RANGOON, Burma – Police said Wednesday (November 20th) they arrested three people suspected of planning bomb attacks on mosques, AFP reported.

The suspects are all Buddhists from Rakhine, where two bouts of unrest last year left about 250 dead and 140,000 displaced, mainly Rohingya Muslims.

A report in the state-run New Light of Myanmar on Wednesday said an initial raid on a guesthouse in the Rangoon area found one suspect "red-handed making bombs with gunpowder and related materials" on November 13th.

It said further investigations led police to arrest two more suspects early Saturday.

It also reported the intended targets were "religious buildings" and that police were still hunting further suspects.

Meanwhile, Burma said Thursday it will not grant citizenship to Muslims identifying themselves as Rohingya, despite renewed pressure from the UN.

Burma views the Rohingya in Rakhine as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and denies them citizenship. A resolution Tuesday at the UN called on Burma to give the Rohingya full access to citizenship and to end violence against them.

    • Violence of any form cannot be justified. Acts of injustice, especially those that lead to the death of others on the grounds that they are a threat to national stability, all of them are malice inspired by the demons cursed by Allah. May Allah protect us.
