JAKARTA, Indonesia – A maid allegedly tortured in Hong Kong hopes to return to help in the investigation against her employer, an official said Wednesday (January 15th) according to AFP.
Erwiana Sulistyaningsih was hospitalised in critical condition in Sragen after returning home last week, claiming she had suffered months of abuse in Hong Kong.
Dita Indah Sari, spokeswoman for the Indonesian Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, said the maid suffered "psychological trauma" due to abuse that left her unable to walk.
She was not given a day off and her employer still owes her Rp. 5m ($420).
Hong Kong police said Tuesday they launched a criminal investigation after migrant worker groups expressed anger at earlier reports authorities were not pursuing the case.
"When she is healthy again, we will accompany her to Hong Kong to lodge a formal report with Hong Kong authorities so they can take action against her employer," she said.
