Suspected militants gunned down the 28-year-old Buddhist woman as she returned to her car from a market in the Ratapanyang area. A note left at the scene indicated that the attack was to avenge the deaths last week of three young Muslim brothers, a local police officer said.

"We will keep killing you as long as you are still on our land," the note read.

Insurgents blame Thai authorities for the boys' murder – although there has been no official evidence to back up the claim.

The gunmen torched her body in front of market goers after shooting the woman dead. Out of fear of retribution from the attackers, no one came forward with information.
