JAKARTA, Indonesia – Security officials throughout Indonesia will be increasing their presence in an effort to protect the nation's Christian minority during the Christmas and New Year's holiday season, local media reported Wednesday (December 21st).

In all, 6,000 additional security personnel will be deployed in the nation's capital, the Jakarta Globe said. An additional 10,000 police will be deployed to predominantly Christian East Nusa Tenggara.

"This is not an overreaction. We just want to anticipate any untoward events and give priority to churches with large numbers of worshippers," the Jakarta Post quoted Comr. Endang Sri Wahyu Utami, a spokesperson for the police in the city of Bandung, as saying.

She added that police will focus on securing 14 major churches in Bandung, all of which host at least 1,000 worshippers. She said a special security detachment of 4,500 personnel would be provided by a joint force of the police, military and public order officials.
