JAKARTA, Indonesia – Customs officials announced Wednesday (July 10th) that they had thwarted attempts to smuggle 347kg of drugs and narcotics worth Rp 254.4 billion ($25.4m) during the first six months of this year, The Jakarta Post reported.
Susiwijono, the Finance Ministry's Director of Revenue and Customs and Excise Regulations, said in a statement that there were 115 separate cases involved and that most of the drugs came from Malaysia. Much of the rest was from India, he added.
According to Tempo, Susiwijono said 48 cases involved container and postal courier service companies; 26 involved passenger luggage; 26 involved items concealed on the body; and 15 cases were inconclusive. Data also suggested that 94 of those arrested were men, compared to 34 women.
