JAKARTA, Indonesia – City officials announced Tuesday (July 9th) they would begin raiding nightclubs and other businesses to ensure activities are Ramadan-appropriate, local media reported.

Jakarta's Public Order office chief Kukuh Hadi Santoso said 225 officers, including some police and military personnel, would fan out across the city to make sure that night clubs, bars and other entertainment establishments obeyed a circular issued by the local tourism and culture agency ordering them to close for the month or sharply restrict hours of operation, The Jakarta Globe reported.

Detik News reported that violators could receive anything from an oral reprimand to revocation of their operating licence.

    • We need the nation's officials to show a firm hand. Do not allow citizen groups to take over the duties of officials and to ensure that the rules are adhered to by nightclubs. There cannot be exceptions for any reason.
