Muslim teacher coming home from mosque killed in Deep South

July 30, 2013

BANGKOK, Thailand – A teacher at an Islamic school in Yala was gunned down Friday evening (July 26th) while returning home from his village mosque, The Bangkok Post reported.

The victim, Ahamah Dorloh, 47, taught at an Islamic school in the tambon of Aiyaweng. Witnesses said he was about to enter his house when a gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle fired at him with an M16 assault rifle, killing him instantly.

Separately, authorities said Sunday that the rebel Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the group holding peace talks with the government, is responsible for about five of the 20 insurgent attacks that have occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, according to The Nation.

During a seminar in Bangkok, National Security Council Secretary General Paradorn Pattanathabut said other insurgent groups were allegedly behind the other 15 incidents, though Paradorn did not identify the groups.

He said the BRN had admitted it was responsible for a bombing Wednesday in Narathiwat but claimed it did not intend to harm civilians. Two teachers travelling by car were killed by shrapnel in the roadside bomb blast, apparently intended for a military vehicle that was also in the area. A third, who was driving the vehicle, reportedly died later of his wounds.

Nineteen schools in Chanae district, where the blast occurred, were shut but reopened Monday.
