Narathiwat explosion kills 3 police

NARATHIWAT, Thailand – Three members of a bomb-disposal unit were killed in a roadside explosion in Narathiwat on Monday (October 28th), local media reported.

    The victims were identified as bomb disposal unit head Shaen Warongphaisit, 50, Nimit Deewong, 32, and Charoon Metruang, 42, according to The Nation. Shaen had led a team of 13 officers to the scene after receiving a tip that suspicious objects were found.

    They turned on a mobile phone signal jammer while examining one of the objects, according to the Post, but suspected insurgents hiding nearby detonated the bomb via phone.

    A chief warrant officer identified only as Somkiat was also wounded in the blast.

    Police successfully detonated a second bomb with a water cannon.

    Narathiwat police chief Pattanawut Angkhanawin said tyres were set on fire Sunday night to lure the authorities to the scene, the Post reported.
