Indonesia donates $2m in Haiyan aid as part of international effort

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia announced Wednesday (November 13th) the donation of $2m in goods and money to the Philippines for victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan, media reported.

    The aid consists of $1m in cash and $1m in goods weighing 75 tonnes as well as logistics, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, according to the Jakarta Globe.

    Several government ministries joined the humanitarian effort, donating food, medical supplies, clothing, generators and other goods. The Ministry of Defence also assigned three Hercules C-130 aircraft to deliver the supplies.

    Worldwide, the United States and Britain sent naval ships to help the effort and donated $20m and $10m, respectively. Japan sent medical personnel and $10m as well.

    The ASEAN Co-ordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) will send an initial $500,000 in aid, AFP reported.

    The Indonesian donation comes from the state budget and national reserves, according to Merdeka.com.
