MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines on Friday (November 15th) said 3,621 died in Super Typhoon Haiyan and 1,140 people remained missing, AFP reported.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Spokesman Reynaldo Balido said the figures resulted from reports compiled by local government units (LGUs).
"The LGUs did not report immediately" because "they have to be careful in their reporting," Balido said. "They have to validate everything. The clearing operations of roads and communities are on-going and we will see if there are more dead bodies (underneath the debris)."
On Monday, John Ging, operations director for the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said the estimate was that at least 10,000 people had died.
The next day, Philippine President Benigno Aquino said this number was "too much," estimating the final toll would be around 2,500.
"We have no way of verifying," UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos said. "I think it will take a long time before we have an accurate assessment of the number of people who have died."
