Indonesia nabs suspect in 2012 attack on police

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Police on Tuesday (November 26th) announced the arrest of a suspected terrorist allegedly involved in an attack on two police officers in Bekasi in May 2012, local media reported.

    The suspect, identified as "YY", was arrested by a joint team of Jakarta Police and counterterrorism unit Detachment 88 in Cipinang, East Jakarta on November 21st, police spokesman Ronny F. Sompie said.

    Police were interrogating the suspect to learn the location of his alleged accomplices, according to The Jakarta Post.

    YY and five others are believed to have been involved in an attack on Ery Sasongko and Jaka. The men shot at the officers after Ery approached them while on patrol. When the shots missed, the attackers assaulted Jaka with machetes and ran him over with motorcycles. Both officers survived.

    Police are investigating the possibility that the six men are involved in other terrorist acts as well, Ronny said.

    According to Tribunnews, YY is believed to have been involved in attacks on police in Jakarta, Depok and Bekasi.
