SENTUL, Indonesia – President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) on Monday (April 7th) inaugurated the Indonesia Peace and Security Centre (IPSC) complex with the intention of making Indonesia among the world leaders for UN peacekeeping, local media reported.
The complex has seven facilities: the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) Peacekeeping Mission Centre, the Counterterrorism Training and Deradicalisation Centre, the Centre for Disaster Management Education and Training, the TNI Force Standby Centre, the Language Development Centre, Defence University and a Military Sports Centre.
Construction on the IPSC, which includes Southeast Asia's largest training facility for peacekeeping forces, began in 2010, according to The Jakarta Post.
"Now that we have this institution, Indonesia can make a big contribution to international peace," SBY said of the complex, built at a cost of Rp. 1.643 trillion ($145.6 billion), according to Tempo.
Indonesia is ranked 17th in the world with its contribution of about 2,000 peacekeeping soldiers, Antara News reported. The president said they'd have to commit an additional 2,000 forces to reach their goal in the next two years.
