TIMIKA, Indonesia –Mining giant Freeport-McMoRan announced plans Tuesday (July 9th) to resume underground work at its site in eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, nearly two months after a deadly tunnel collapse killed 28 workers, AFP reported.
The energy ministry authorised the firm's Indonesian subsidiary to restart underground production at Grasberg, a gold and copper mine in the mountains of Papua province where the workers died May 14th.
Production had been halted since the collapse, which occurred as workers participated in a safety training exercise.
