JAKARTA, Indonesia – A truck carrying members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) who planned to raid entertainment venues they found inappropriate veered out of control Thursday (July 18th), killing a woman aboard a motorcycle in Sukorejo, Central Java, local media reported.

Forty-eight members of FPI were detained for questioning, the Jakarta Post reported.

Hundreds of local residents had gathered to confront the FPI, who had arrived in Sukorejo on Wednesday afternoon to force venues to close in observance of Ramadan, according to The Jakarta Post.

Two FPI members were injured and two cars were destroyed in ensuing clashes. When the FPI refused to pay for damages, members were chased out of town by residents. Along the way, their truck hit the woman and her husband aboard the motorcycle, according to Kompas.com.

    • The FPI are not the authorities and do not have the right to enforce order. Whatever the reason, damaging other people's property is a criminal act. When the authorities allow FPI to do wrong, it is natural that people will stop this violent mob. I salute the people of Sukorejo. The FPI members involved should be brought to court.
