O Allah, O Rabb, give Your guidance to us all. You are All-hearing, enlighten all the selfish people, the self-righteous and all who think themselves the most holy. The human race as Your creations are always fighting over religion. We want to live in peace and feel secure, comfortable, and calm in our worship of You in our way. Those who like loud calls to prayer and disturbing people, you need to be considerate, and be understanding and tolerant. Indonesia will become great. Amen.

There really are too many mosques! In Jakarta alone they cause noise pollution and they also deplete water catchment areas in Jakarta! If you want, build one that can accommodate many worshipers! Don't build little ones that just make things crowded!

The true worship is not by force like the loud noises but by voluntary love. The word of God also are purely voluntary. if there is a treasure in the scripture, people will try to seek and find.

"We" do not mean to prohibit the call to prayer or prevent Muslims from carrying out their worship. But please, do not overuse the the loudspeakers, especially at dawn. Please adjust the volume of the speakers. We live among other people and there are non-Muslims around us, people who are sick, resting babies, people who need rest. The intent of a call to prayer is a noble one indeed, reminding us to give thanks to the divine, however, when you are reading holy verses, praying and giving praise, please use indoor speakers or just read it to yourself (loud sounds can often disrupt other people's worshipping. Worship is not only done in the mosque, there are people worshiping outside. Do people need to know that we are conducting worship using loudspeakers?). Reading holy verses, praise, prayers are means of personal communication with the almighty. The God we worship hears all and is close. Allah understands what is being said and what is being asked by His children (worshippers). "And do not recite too loudly in your prayer or too quietly but seek between an intermediate way." (Al Isra': 110). In another verse. "Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors." (Ala'raf). In addition, Zikr is worship of the individual directly to Allah SWT. That is why we do not need loudspeakers whether indoors or outside. "And carry out Zikr (remembrance) of your God in your heart.

In Indonesia, is it only Muslims who are allowed to put on speakers loudly? We as former Muslims are fighting for equal rights for other religions so that they will be allowed to set up speakers for prayer events to the Indonesian president and the House of Representatives. If Muslims are allowed to hold 24 hour sermons on outgoing speakers with the excuse that all residents should be able to hear, then the question is: which residents? This is discrimination because not all Indonesian citizens are Muslim.

For me, I still maintain that the lectures/sermons must be heard outside the mosque because it would be in vain if it is not heard outside the mosque; the housewives would gossip, watch gossip television shows, search the internet for things that can potentially result in depravity, it is the same with radio. What needs to be done is not shutting off the outer speakers but to set them so that the sounds they emit will not disturb and their duration should be limited - not too long. I think that this way, non-Muslims will be able to understand.

Why are we fussing about mosque speakers, let's seek a verdict from a judge. It would be fair and humane. Our clerics are not yet capable of that, wallahualam.

It would be alright if the voice reciting it were melodic. Not only is it shrill and loud, it is also off key. They also have little kids delivering the praises. This is when we have a problem and this is when the devil takes over. Who becomes the mediator in this case?

Concerning this speaker business, because it has to do with clerics it requires legal certainty because the plaintiff must be protected as they would be vulnerable to slander and murder.

You are funny. Why don't you just move the mosque to the mountains or the ocean while you're at it. You are an idiot, we who are complaining live in big and densely populated cities. We no longer live in the era of the Prophet when there were still few people. It might be true that in the past we had to get up on the dome. Did they have super hoax then as we do now? Think, you fool!

All good things, if done in excess would become harmful. Aren't today's state-of-the-art loudspeakers loud enough? It depends on who you ask. Allah SWT is omniscient and hears all.

Worship is finding balance in life, not doing whatever we want. This means that in worship we must be aware of the environmental aspects and local wisdom.

What we need to talk about are places of entertainment that produce loud noises (not the breaking of wind) and that cause people to be intoxicated because their souls are fondled by music that does not lead to their God but in all directions so they can only nod their heads because they are weighed down by devils, no sense of shame. It is not modern because it is not appreciative of time and not forward thinking). People used to worship more and therefore the evil would not dare enter or merge with the human body, but now many do not worship enough so it is better to not speak and stay silent because you will be guided by desire because when worship is lacking, evil and devils will merge with human bodies. This is why now we rarely see evil on the street; they have merged with human bodies. Sorry.

The speakers should not be pointed down towards the nearby residences. Angle them in such a way so that they only reach places that are at a distance. If you like having it that loud so much, put them inside the mosque with the same volume. The fact remains that gospel does not make healthy ears if it exceeds the ears' capacity to listen. What would faith without knowledge achieve?

External speakers are only used for the calls to prayer. Praying and Al-Quran recitations using external speakers is excessive, disruptive for people who are praying and resting, children who are studying, sick people, and violates the Prophet's commands, and even insults Allah SWT. Allah SWT hears all and forbids His followers from praying loudly. Moreover, it is a detriment to spreading the Islamic message itself.

I do not think that it is appropriate for non-Muslims to protest the use of loudspeakers for prayer recitation activities outside the call to prayer, as long as they are done at the right time and are not excessive. Muslims who live near churches do not protest the bells that toll every 15 minutes! Logically, what is the difference between the sound of the bells and the sounds emanating from the mosque speakers? In order to make the use of external mosque speakers seem less annoying, aside from the people in charge of the mosque itself, we as people who live near mosques must realize that: 1. What is conveyed through the recitations heard through the speakers are the kalamullah, Allah's instructions for us. As such, they must be listened to carefully, solemnly, and intently so we can receive its wisdom. Looking at it this way, we will not feel annoyed, on the contrary, our hearts will be moved when we receive His word. Believe it or not, this is what I feel. I actually wish that I can listen to recitations/sermons from the mosque speakers at times when I could not go to the mosque because I am tired after having just come home from work. 2. Consider the recitations, praises, prayers etc. that we hear from the mosque speakers as spiritual nourishment, quenching our barren souls, and there will not be any feelings of annoyance. Even when we are sick we will recover quickly because we are motivated by the sermons coming through the mosque speakers. It comes time to protest when the sounds from the mosques become excessive and have no serious purpose. Then, the people in charge of the mosque should do the following to avoid unwanted incidents: 1. Calls to prayer and sermons to be made to use different microphones, so they can adjust the volume for them. They do not need a high volume setting for sermons, a soft setting would suffice. The important thing is that besides being heard inside the mosque they can be heard outside so that women and teenage girls at home can receive spiritual invigoration. This is better than not hearing the sermons which will ultimately lead to defamation, slander and gossip. These are clearly sinful! 2. Recitations/praises/prayers should be conducted before the calls to prayer according to the following time frames: A. 15 minutes before the dawn call to prayer B. 5 minutes before the dzuhur and ashar calls to prayer C. 15 minutes before the evening (maghrib) call to prayer God willing we stay safe and this will not cause trouble.

It's not that I do not like the call to prayer, but if it is too loud, it becomes harder to understand because the capacity of our ears to process sound is limited.

As a Muslim, I enjoy hearing a loud call to prayer. Its purpose is so that we could hurry to the mosque to pray together early. As a person who abides by the Pancasila, I urge that we decrease the volume out of mutual respect, because it disturbs sleeping babies and other non-Muslim people.

Usually the closer we are to the mosque (underneath the tower) the prayer calls cannot be heard. Closer is not louder therefore many fall asleep.

Forgive me, don't take this the wrong way. My house is 500 m away from a mosque and the calls to prayer are very loud, imagine what it's like for those who live right next door to the mosque? Not everyone can tolerate loud noises, even calls to prayer (this also goes for music, vehicles etc.). Are they to move or sell their houses? It's not that simple, right? Maybe what they are trying to say is that the volume should be turned down. All Muslims have rights, both those who like loud prayer calls and those who prefer them on the soft side. All we need to do is talk about a solution. May Allah reward you.
