UN launches aid effort as death toll tops 600 in Philippines

DAVAO, the Philippines – With desperation levels growing, the UN launched a $65m aid appeal Monday (December 10th) on behalf of survivors of Typhoon Bopha, which killed more than 600 people in the southern Philippines last week, AFP reported

UN official Luiza Carvalho said the funds would initially help provide food, water and emergency shelter to 480,000 people on Mindanao Island where landslides and floods decimated entire communities and devastated farms and businesses.

The strongest typhoon in the region in more than 80 years left residents without any means to feed their families, according to AFP.
